2019 Vintage

2018-2019 started with a very rainy autumn, with November having the greatest rainfall accumulated of the entire campaign - 148 mm.
The winter months were quite dry, with monthly averages around 30 mm, which is very low for the usual in Coelheiros.
Spring brought rain and As the Portuguese saying goes “Em Abril águas mil” – literally “In April a thousand waters”, we had 82 mm which helped to restore water levels in the soil. Still, the remaining months of spring and summer were quite dry.

At the end of August, Saint Peter decided to redeem himself from the past months: suddenly a great thunderstorm in which 37 mm fell in just 30 minutes, which caused some flooding in the cellar and delayed the maturation of some grape varieties, namely Alicante Bouschet and the Touriga Nacional.

At the end of the campaign we recorded 76 days of precipitation, totalling 454 mm, 26% less than the average recorded over the last 30 years (609 mm).
In terms of temperature, it was a normal year. The coldest month was January, with an average temperature of 8,1 ° C and the warmest month was August with an average temperature of 23 ° C. The highest temperature recorded was 41,1 ° C on the 11th of July, which caused some scalding in more sensitive varieties such as Antão Vaz.

The vine cycle was shorter, about 14 days compared to the previous year, mainly due to the high thermal amplitudes (day / night) that the months of June and July recorded. The anticipation of the cycle could have been problematic had the month of August been warmer, but fortunately it was quite mild which helped the maturation of the grapes to be slow and progressive. We started the harvest on August 20th with the whites of Alto Vineyard, and ended with Choupal Vineyard on September 25th. We harvested a total of 216 tons, of which 150 were red grapes (69%) and 66 white grapes (31%).

In qualitative terms we are happy with the 2019 vintage: white wines show great intensity of primary fruit, and vibrant acidity. The red wines have exuberance in the nose, with concentration in the palate and well-melted tannins, with good aging potential.

Also, in 2018-2019 all our plots were managed according to the organic production method and we started our first trials of biodynamic viticulture in Sobreira and Ribeira Vineyards.
